AWARENESS
Awareness is the main key to YOUR personal protection (self-defense) - knowing what is going on around you and the type of environment you find yourself to be in. We won't dig deep into the topic of awareness, however we will cover a few tips and some practice drills that you can do to build your skills.
It may sound too simple and you may be thinking that you are aware, but are you?? You would be surprised at how many are not fully aware of their surroundings! Often people are more focused on keeping up with their social media than on noticing who is around them. Cell phones, fashion, shopping, may keep them from noticing that they are in a dangerous situation.
TYPE OF AWARENESS
- Self: Having confidence in yourself, feeling energized, not sad or depressed or having your attention locked on what you are doing.
Making yourself a hard target by carrying yourself in a confident level tells onlookers that you are not an easy target.
- Others: Seeing who is around you. Could you close your eyes and describe a person next to you? What are they wearing? How many people are around you? What are they communicating to you?
- Environment: Is it sunny, cold, wet, cloudy or is it raining? How many exits are there in the building? What can you use as a defense weapon before using excessive force such as a gun, knife or any sharp object?
- to ourselves,
- to what or who is around us, and
- to the type of environment we are in.
But how do I stay alert?

Reflection Surfaces - This is a great way to find out what or who is behind you. If you sense you are being followed, don’t make it obvious by looking behind you. You can use the reflection of the building windows, car windows, or even the gloss off a shiny car or truck. These are small pointers to help you be more aware of your surroundings.

PRACTICE DRILLS

2. Always sit with your back towards the wall facing the door & windows and make sure your friends do the same for you.
3. Always take different routes going home or other location you are going to or from.
4. Close your eyes and describe the person next to you and/or items in your surroundings.
5. Always have something in your hand to be ready to defend or attack your opponent.
6. Always look around you when you are getting in or out of your car or home and identify potential threats.
7. Always use the reflection off cars, doors, windows, buildings to check what is behind you.
